Wonderful day hike (in cooler months) through the mountains. You might see some Bighorn Sheep. No dogs on trail, but allowed in the Cove Oasis trails surrounding. Bring water and check temperatures before going.

Excellent hike from The Cove to Lake Cahuilla. This is a fairly easy trail with a several hundred feet elevation gain.

The Cove to Lake Trail departs from the La Quinta Cove Oasis and leads hikers through an enchanting landscape of mountain, water, and sky. After parking in the unpaved lot at the corner of Avenida Bermudas and Calle Tecate, follow the Cove Oasis Trail for .67 miles before turning left on the Cove to Lake Trail. The first part of the path is relatively flat, cutting through wide-open sandy terrain at the base of the Southern Santa Rosa Mountains before transitioning to more ups and downs (enough to get your blood pumping but still suitable for runners, mountain bikers, and horseback riders). Springtime treats travelers to a host of beautiful wildflowers speckling the mountainside, and some hikers are even lucky enough to spot bighorn sheep grazing on the emerald green fairways of the Quarry Golf Course, which runs parallel to part of the hike. The path eventually veers away from the private property and toward the sparkling waters of Lake Cahuilla, whose mirror-like surface reflects the surrounding rock formations and clear blue sky above. At this point, many hikers return via the same route, which spans a total of 6.4 miles out and back, as there is a fee to use any of the facilities within Lake Cahuilla Park. Total Distance: 6.4 miles Level: Moderate

The beginning of the trail, when traveling from east to west, follows a sandy wash. While it is not difficult, the loose sand is harder for hiking, trail running, or mountain biking than firmer soil. After a short while, the path takes a turn up the slope and gives great views of The Quarry at La Quinta Golf Club. Then the trail returns to a sandy wash for a short while and begins a climb through the pass to the La Quinta Cove. The top of the La Quinta Cove is widely used by dog walkers, mountain bikers, and runners. While the first part of the trail should be relatively peaceful and quiet, the top of the cove will have more activity.

One of my favorite local hikes. Gorgeous rocky scenery, and if you're lucky, you might even find an ancient seashell or two along the way!
