Hikes, Paddles, and floats in the area
This area is in the Dupont State Forest to the Southeast of Fletcher, NC. Google Hooker Falls and the map will guide you tot he parking lot. Its about 30 minute drive, and it does get a crowd on weekends in the summer months.
Take shoes or sandals for hiking in the water. There are several side trails that access the river for wading. Swimming is not recommended, but you know it might happen from time to time. I leave that for you to decide.

brave the 5 k uphill hike to the top of Grey Beard Mountain, or hike the maze of trails near the parking area, find the waterfall here. If its the holiday season, take a biodegradable ornament to hang on the Xmas tree on the trail. Great hike for kids.

It's not Colorado, but it's not far away either ! And truly, they do a great job. it's run well, safe organized, have great beer in the kitchy old lodge. They rent both skis and snowboards, but I'd recommend renting a board from the Flipside Board shop down the hill.
My kids grew up going here every week with a school club, and we get season passes each year. highly recommend if your in town from November through March.

Great little seafood and beer joint just .5 miles from me. Friday night is LOBSTER NIGHT!!!! Lots of good beer on tap, more restaurant scene than bar though.
