Beach

Walkerville North Beach is the closest beach to Jandi and is located within walking distance, about a 25-minute walk. If you don't like walking up hill, it's best to drive down and park along the foreshore rather than walk as the trip back can be painful (especially with young children!). It's a short and beautiful drive down the cliff through a temperate rainforest. Please be aware, as echidnas and wombats are often found on this road. Walkerville North is very rocky. It has great rock pools to explore which are a hit with young kids. Sand shoes are a good idea if you have them, there are a few pairs of kids sand shoes in the laundry at Jandi if you would like to use them. There is a beached swimming area near the caravan park as well as one at the end of the road near where the boats launch. Cars can drive on the sand to launch boats here, make sure when you put your towels down that they are not in the way of the launching boats. Walkerville Beaches are best experienced at low tide, at high tide there is often minimal sand. These beaches, while quite safe, are not patrolled at all, so please take care. When the waters are calm there is good snorkeling around the rocks, there are snorkels provided in the laundry of Jandi. We suggest washing them with warm soapy water before and after use. There is a toilet block at Walkerville North Beach, it is also a nice walk up to the caravan park to get fish and chips or ice creams from the kiosk (when it is open) A public electric BBQ and tables are located next to the caravan park as well as half way down the beach. There is no drinkable water at Walkerville Beach so we suggest you bring your own. There is usually good phone reception at Walkerville beach.

Walkerville South Beach is a 7-minute drive from Jandi. In the off-peak season, you'll be able to get a park right near the beach, however, in peak season, you'll probably struggle to get a park, unless you get there early in the morning. The council sets up traffic control in summer and only allows a certain amount of cars to park in the area. Hot local tip... park at the North Beach (more available parking) and walk to the South Beach during low-tide (just make sure you walk back before high-tide!) The historic lime kilns are located on the South Beach (some say that Flinders Street railway station was built from the lime mined at Walkerville) and are well worth a look. There's also the historic coastal cemetary walk, which starts at the South Beach... nice and easy, around 15-minutes or so from the car park. A quaint, little cemetary where the lime miners and their families were buried following their passing in the 1800's. The South Beach offers a semi-protected, small 'bay' where the water is gentle and safe for children (most of the time). Please note that there aren't any lifeguards at Walkerville at all, and sometimes you're the only person on the beach. There's a toilet block located up the hill near the car park. Our favourite beach in Walkerville... Alison Lester wrote her book 'Magic Beach' based on Walkerville South Beach (there's also a signed copy of her book at Jandi, can you find it?)

Visiting the Walkerville South Beach during peak-time

During the summer months, the Walkerville South Beach can be quite difficult to get a car park. Your options are: * Get there early * Park at Walkerville North beach and walk to South beach during low-tide There are traffic control STOP/SLOW signs in use during peak times with a "one vehicle leaves, one vehicle can find a park" type system in force. Queues for the car park can be long and frustrating.

Walking to the Walkerville North Beach

Walkerville North Beach is approximately a 25-minute walk from Jandi House. It's downhill on the way there and uphill on the way back. If you have more than one car, one thing you can do is park a car at the North Beach and then drive back up to Jandi House, that way, when you've finished at the beach for the day, you can simply drive back up the hill, rather than walk if you think you'll be tired.
