Food Scene
17th street has tons of great food without the touristy feel of most places on balboa: Kean coffee (great roaster with Blackmarket Bakery treats), Pandor Bakery (best baguettes and eclairs), Beach Pit BBQ (almost as good as Texas), to name a few of my favorites.

Sightseeing
Take the ferry over from Balboa island, You can visit the Original Banana Stand (as seen in Arrested Development :) and go to the original Ruby's Diner at the end of the pier. This is where all the whale watching and catalina boats leave from. Cute little boardwalk and boat/SUP rentals.

Parks & Nature
Beach with free parking if you go to the Beachcomber Cafe. There are extensive trails up into the mountains too if you want to work up a sweat before jumping into the clear blue waters.

Drinks & Nightlife
Tons of bars, very touristy. Some great restaurants, and some medicore ones with wonderful views. Bear Flag Fish Co. is the place for the best fresh Poke you'll ever have.

As seen in the New York times. I think people actually plan trips around coming here. Drop the kids at Disney and shop the day away.

Essentials
Trader Joe's. Need I say more? Lot's of inexpensive and delicious food options for the students. We love Blaze Pizza ($8 build your own fast fired pies), and Yushoken Izakaya & Ramen. But there is a new Indian place going in that we are V. excited about.
