This short, steep walk through woodland, heath and rainforest leads to a mine that was open from the 1860s to 1915. The metre thick coal seam was of poor quality and only used for goods engines. For safety reasons, fencing prevents entry to the mine. This walk can also be undertaken from the Erith Coal Mine car park off Echo Point Road.

In December 2009 The Shed closed its doors and Dirty Janes Bowral was born in the heart of Bowral. This business was expanded to larger premises which housed a main showroom known as The Emporium in the front corner building, as well as an impressive warehouse space located behind the Emporium known as The Market. The original Dirty Janes Bowral site underwent a major renovation in 2016, transforming the facade and internal fit out of the front building on the corner of Bong Bong & Banyette Street (formally The Emporium) into what is now a landmark building, known as The Acre.

Retford Park Gardens are open Thursday through Sunday every week, house access by guided tour only on Saturdays and Sundays. Retford Park is a place of great heritage significance; its European history extends back to grants of land promised to Edward Riley senior by Governor Macquarie in 1821. The house was built in 1887 by Samuel Hordern (1849-1909) merchant and stockbreeder, and his wife Jane nee Booth. The house at Retford Park (designed by Albert Bond) is set on a low rise, a grand rendered brick Italianate style residence. It was in 1964 that James Fairfax bought the property and started to turn it from an agricultural property to a gentleman’s residence. Having been in the caring hands of Mr Fairfax for over 50 years, the garden is a delight to wander through.

This is one of our favourite local walks along the Berrima River. Commencing at the Berrima Picnic and Camping Ground, the Berrima River Walk is perfect for those who want to learn about the town’s history while also enjoying some fresh air. Guiding you along the riverbank, the walk passes 17 interpretive signs telling the stories of the German merchant seamen, officers, executives and prisoners of war who interned here for four years during World War I at the German Internment Camp. The information includes a closer look at the various huts, gardens, bridges and boats that were built here during this time. The track is 1.8km each way and dog friendly.

High on the hill overlooking the historic colonial village of Berrima is Harper's Mansion. The 1834 two storey brick house proudly sits in a couple of acres of fine cool climate gardens. The House has been extensively restored and is now a superb example of an early Australian Georgian country house. The roses planted along the fence line from the front of the house down to the gate were selected for their suitability by Heather Cant, a local National Trust member and noted gardener and rose collector. The selection was based on the period when Harpers was built and for their continuous flowering habit. The garden also boasts a long hazelnut walk, a large pond home to native frogs and an old well. A special delight for children, young and old, is the extensive maze, formed by a tall leylandii hedge, established over 14 years ago. Bookings essential for the guided tour.

Connecting Echo Point picnic area with Bonnie View, this easy walking track offers a quiet 750m stroll through open forest, with scenic views as a reward at either end. Beginning behind the Echo Point picnic shelter, the track blooms in spring with beautiful wildflowers like yellow banksia and purple geebungs. It also offers a terrific place for native birdwatching at any time of year – gang gang cockatoos are particularly beautiful. Given the picnic facilities at Echo Point, consider setting out on Lovers walking track after a leisurely lunch, and then taking advantage of several nearby walks to extend the afternoon hike even further. After reaching Bonnie View, you can return to Echo Point via the gravel road and wishing well, stretching the circuit out to an hour. You might also like to join the walk with a stroll in the opposite direction, descending through the sandstone escarpment at Echo Point on Mount Carnarvon walking track, which leads to a lesser-visited hilltop lookout.
