One of the most magical places in Victoria. Seriously. The park is home to a number of pristine beaches and beautiful bushland. Our favourite beaches to visit are Whiskey and Picnic bay, as they are a 1 hour and 40 minute drive. We often see dolphins and there are great rock pools to explore. If you'd like to go a little deeper into the park, visit tidal river. There are plenty of walks on offer - our favourite is climbing Mount Oberon (2 hr drive) for the amazing view, although it is a relatively difficult hike. Stop at the Fish Creek hotel for dinner on your way home, or call into Gurney's cidery for a drink before 5pm.

Walkerville South beach has calm, crystal clear water which is great for swimming and soft white sand. We like to pack a picnic and find a secluded spot amongst the beautiful rocks to spend the day. There is a dilapidated historic lime kiln on the beach, which makes you feel like you're on a European holiday. Take the short walking track (East) through the bushland to view the kiln from above and visit the historic cemetery. If you head west along the beach, you'll find a series of staircases tucked away which lead to other smaller bays. When the tide is low, you can often find a bay all to yourself. Stop in Meeniyan for lunch (see recommendations below) or Trulli for a woodfired pizza dinner (weekends). -1hr 15min drive

A half hour drive along the Morwell river and a short but steep walk down to the beautiful upper and lower falls. We like to have a paddle and cool off here in the summer, or visit in winter when the water is really flowing and the surrounding rainforest is lush and green.

A tiny historic gold mining town set in the mountains. Autumn is a beautiful time to visit when the trees are changing colour. There are some lovely nearby nature walks. -1 hours drive (windy roads)

Food scene

Thought we'd use this section to list some of the surrounding towns that may be of interest if you're looking for a day out: MEENIYAN, 45 mins Has some good dining options: The produce at 'Trulli Pantry' is amazing, as are the homemade pies from 'Pickles and Bread'. 'Pandesal Bakery' has lovely cakes and pastries. Head to Meeniyan square for woodfired pizza, gelato by 'Trulli' (as well as Sailor's Grave beer) on weekends. Can also recommend 'Moo's cafe' and 'The Meeniyan Store'. The town also hosts an annual garlic festival (heck yes). LOCH, 1hr 10min Very hip for a tiny country town. Some great dining & local produce options. We like the sandwiches from 'The Loch Grocer'. MIRBOO NORTH, 20 mins Small town in the Strzelecki ranges. We recommend eating at Lamezleighs or if you’re into craft beer, visit the Grand Ridge brewery for a pint. You can stop by the Lyrebird Walk on your way home. LOCAL PUBS, 10-25 mins The Yinnar hotel serves classic pub food & hosts Parma nights. We also enjoy the ‘Traveller’s Rest Hotel’ in Thorpdale, as it has a quaint country charm and local wines. WE ALSO LOVE 'Gurneys Cidery', Foster - Grab a paddle, a cheese platter and enjoy the beautiful view. Carrujung Estate (winery 35 minutes from Tarra Bulga). Messmates Dining and Hogget kitchen (both in Warragul and a short detour off the Princes highway on your way to The Barn).

Neighbourhoods

Yinnar FOOD & SHOPPING The township of Yinnar has a post office which doubles as a chemist. The general store is currently closed but will reopen soon as a bakery. Cafe 3869 has decent coffee, hot food to take away or eat in & home made meals to heat at home. They also have a selection of bakery treats. The local pub serves classic country pub grub (Tuesday night is usually 'parma night'). It gets busy, so we recommend booking ahead. The town of CHURCHILL (10min) is the place to go if you need to do a grocery shop or pick up alcohol. The is a woolies, a liquorland, a chemist and a drive through bottle shop. It also has a Chinese restaurant, as well as a pizza, noodle and fish and chip shop (that we haven't yet tried). We love the local Yinnar church op shop - it's the way op shops used to be. Great vintage finds, sweet old ladies and old school prices. Usually open every day except Tuesday, Wednesday & Sunday. ENTERTAINMENT The town really comes alive for the annual Gippsland Sculpture Festival, usually held biannually in autumn. The streets are filled with installations from local artist and the Arc gallery hosts a sculpture exhibition. Event are held throughout the festival including live music, live demonstrations and workshops. Speaking of art, Yinnar is full of artists! Check out the local Arc gallery for art exhibitions and occasionally live music in the band room. SIGHTS Martin reserve is not far from us - it has a creek which is great for dipping your toes in during summer Morwell national park is just a short drive away.
