We love this small brewery. Jon and Carrieann take brewing back to when farmers grew their own ingredients and craft fine artisan ales by hand. They are one of the few breweries in the US creating carbonation with local wildflower honey from their farm. They also brew hard jun kombucha which is my favorite. They have goats, sheep, chickens and ducks that they move around their property fertilizing and enriching the soil. On the weekends they have rotating food trucks to grab a meal. If you want to see a brewery coexisting with nature and their surroundings, you must visit them.

This is great place to get handcrafted pizza, pasta, rustic salads and soups. You can't go wrong with anything on their menu.

This upscale restaurant is inspired by the great American melting pot of culinary cultures and techniques. They use great ingredients and treat them with respect for where they come from. I have always loved everything I have ordered here, and many times have said "this is the best ___ I have ever eaten!"

Everybody loves Umi. This fine dining Japanese restaurant's goal is to provide the highest quality Japanese cuisine and sushi in Western North Carolina. It is one of our go to places to eat.

Sightseeing

Dupont is an outdoor lovers dream with many waterfalls and 86 miles of trails on 10,000 protected acres. Most visitors flock to the 3 mile roundtrip hike to three waterfalls (Hooker, Triple and High Falls), which aren't to be missed, but my favorite is the trek up to Cedar Rock for the mountain views. It's one of North Carolina's best mountain biking and horseback riding areas.

Pisgah National Forrest has 500,000+ acres and features some of the most beautiful and rugged mountain scenery in eastern North America. It is broken up into 3 Ranger Districts, and we are closest to The Pisgah Ranger District (the pin on this map goes to a different district that is north of Asheville, but the places I'm suggesting are entered from Pisgah Forest on rt 64 to 276 from Hendersonville). It is dominated by Mt. Pisgah, (located roughly between Brevard and Waynesville) on the Blue Ridge Parkway, and is accessed from Pisgah Forest which is 30 minutes from us. To get to the parkway is another 15-20 minutes. On the way, you pass some wonderful waterfalls and hikes: Looking Glass Falls, Sliding Rock and Moore Cove Falls. At the top, the Blue Ridge Parkway is a beautiful drive with endless views and many pull offs along the way. The Shining Rock areas has my favorite hikes. Black Balsm Knob, Sam Knob and Graveyard Fields take you on some of the most beautiful hikes and views in this area.

Located in Flat Rock, 15 minutes from Poppy Place is the home of America's poet Carl Sandburg. A third of his work was written from this property. From the parking area, walk 1/3 mile to the home where there are tours available. Just past the home is the goat barn. I think the goats are the highlight of the park, but I may be bias since I volunteer here taking care of them. Mrs. Sandburg's goat breeding program produced champion goats and led to the improvements of goats as milk producing animals. The goats that the park service cares for are all descendants from Mrs. Sandburg's herd.

Lazy Otter Outfitters is located just outside of Hendersonville in Mills River. They offer Kayak, canoe, paddle boards and tube trips on 20 miles of the "undiscovered" French Broad: through Henderson County. Easy flat water good for any level of paddler. Reservations are required, no walk ins.

Downtown Hendersonville had the second largest downtown in Western North Carolina. Main street winds around planter boxes and lush landscaping, with more than 100 shops and 25 restaurants, there is a big variety of locally-owned high quality stores and galleries. Most businesses are along a six block section of main street, making it easy to explore. If you are a beer or wine drinker, you should check out the Cheers Trail. It's the only trail (not an actual trail, but a brochure mapped out with destinations) in North Carolina showcasing four different types of craft beverages. Choose from 23 different tasting experiences all located in and around Hendersonville. It includes 11 breweries, 6 wineries, 3 hard cideries, and 1 meadery. I keep a copy of the cheers trail brochure available at Poppy Place, but you can also download the brochure online. They also have an orchard trail (Henderson County is NC's largest apple producing county and seventh largest nationally), art gallery trail, farm market trail, heritage trail and quilt block trail, that all have brochures which are all wonderful ways to find out where things of your specific interests are in our area.

From April - October on Saturdays from 8am-1pm visit the Hendersonville Farmers Market. You can find produce, meat, eggs, dairy, honey, baked goods, crafts and more. Food trucks are a staple to enjoy breakfast or lunch. It's located at the Historic Train Depot and is something I always look forward to on Saturdays.
