Narooma

Narooma is a popular holiday and retirement town at the mouth of the Wagonga Inlet. It is an important service centre for the surrounding small towns and villages. Set against the backdrop of Gulaga Mountain (previously known as Mount Dromedary) and the mainland departure point for visitors to Montague Island, it is a pleasant, medium-sized town surrounded by beautiful, lonely beaches; a coastline of inlets, lakes and rivers; and substantial areas of natural beauty which attract bushwalkers, bird watchers and holidaymakers eager to enjoy water sports including swimming, surfing, water skiing, sailing, fishing and wind surfing.

Definitely a favorite with the locals including myself. Fabulous meals, friendly staff and always happy to accommodate your request. You can either dine in or take away. While you wait for your take away perhaps pop across the road to the beach, where you may sight a pod of dolphins or a whale migrating. My personal favourite: Squid 4 ways!

Fairly new cafe, a hidden gem tucked away at The Marina. Perfect spot to take in the view of Forsters Bay while enjoying a light lunch. Did you know, they have a dog friendly seating area directly in front of the water and i believe they now offer puppaccinos to totally spoil your pet?

For an early morning brew, they make one of the best chai teas or locally roasted coffees in town. Ensure you schedule a time to visit, and remember they open from 7.00 am and close 1.00 pm normally.

Gorgeous setting for a morning or afternoon meal or refreshment . Choose a sunny day, as their deck outside can go under water with too much rain. Also note, If you're not good with steep stairs, perhaps give it a miss.

Fabulous little cafe hang. Huge breakies and if you are a vegetarian lover, try their tofu dish. After a fun night, visit them for an open mic on a Friday night, sure to put a smile on your face?

Historic town once famous for the Big Cheese. There was a time when, travelling down the Princes Highway from Sydney to the Victorian border, the main reason for stopping at Bodalla was the “Big Cheese”. Travellers would stop to buy some of the estimable local cheddar from the shop beneath its cheesy shadow. The Big Cheese shop has long since closed and the "big" thing looks sad and discarded. In its place is the remarkable Bodalla Dairy - a combination of a cheese factory and a shop specialising in dairy products. Beyond its cheese this strange town, with a winding main street, is notable for the handsome All Saints Anglican Church at the northern end of the town, the rolling green surrounding countryside, and the unusual timber Catholic church at the southern end of town.

My personal favourite places to eat

It has to be our favorite pub to eat in Narooma, hands down. Nepalese is the main fare however they also offer a wide range of cuisines. Be sure to ask for their ginger creme brulee, to die for. Ph: (02) 44762 00 If you like art deco, you'll love their dining room. Tip: Like most good places to eat in Narooma, you will need to book ahead of time.

The Quaterdeck is a personal favorite. If you like a venue with great atmosphere, live music, then go no further. Their cocktails are full strength and pack a punch. I particularly love the whitebait entree and you can't go past their pulled pork, so my husband says. Currently, only open from Thursday to Sunday.

What more can I say, if an old-fashion milkshake and a good hearty pie is your thing, stop at this cafe. Their Devonshire teas are mouth watering and any meal can be enjoyed out on their covered rear deck whilst taking in the rural setting.

Bingi Dreaming Track Follow in the footsteps of the Brinja-Yuin people as you walk the Bingi Dreaming track. Traditionally, Dreaming tracks or Song Lines link the places visited by Aboriginal people, the Bingi Dreaming track links campsites, ceremonial and trade sites, fresh water and plentiful coastal food sources. Along the way, you might see stone artefacts or patches of shell middens. The walk passes through different types of coastal habitat; there are great opportunities for birdwatching among the heathlands, forests and lakeshores and you’re likely to see kangaroos and wallabies relaxing in the sun. If you’re walking during whale watching season, be sure to stop off at one of the vantage points along the way for a glimpse of the majestic creatures, as well as panoramic views of Gulaga (Mount Dromedary) and Baranguba (Montague Island). Stretching from Congo in the north to Tuross Head in the south, you can start the 14 kilometre walk from either end, or break it up into a few shorter walks to enjoy over a couple of days.
