Food scene

The Cape Tavern is a short walk from the house and provides excellent bistro type food. It also has some live entertainment over the summer period in the beer garden and is highly recommended. It is very popular and you need to book as early as you can especially for dinner. The number is 5674 8122.

City/town information

Cape Paterson weather varies from a mean high of 26 degrees Celsius in February to a chilly 14 in July. The actual temperatures can vary significantly from day to day being exposed to the ocean and can reach the high 30s in summer and single figures in winter. Even from day to day the temperatures can vary significantly, and visitors should be prepared for such. There are a number of beaches in Cape Paterson and surrounds, two of which are about five minutes walk from the house. Second surf beach This is accessed via the car park directly behind the house via the walking track. This is an ocean beach and can be very dangerous at times so only experienced swimmers and surfers should enter the water. Any children should be closely monitored as there can be a strong rip present and there are no lifesavers. First surf beach This is also a surf beach however is a safer beach for intermediate swimmers and is regularly used by children. It still can be dangerous so children in particular should be supervised closely. There are lifesavers in attendance on weekends and public holidays only from the start of December until Easter Monday each year. Bay beach/rock pool beach This beach is a safer beach as it is more protected from the waves. There are also lifesavers on weekends during the summer months and is about 15 minutes walk. Undertow bay This can be treacherous and is not patrolled by lifesavers. I recommend great caution swimming in there as it changes from deep to shallow very quickly and the waves break very hard. On a very small swell it can be a great beach to swim however very few people swim there as it is so dangerous. F-break This is the extension of Second surf beach. The Oaks Beautiful beach good for walking and swimming and surfing – 5 minute drive towards Inverloch Eagles next and Shack Bay Scenic beaches, can be good for snorkeling or surfing on a larger swell – 10 minute drive towards Inverloch Harmers haven Great for walking and snorkeling – 5 minute drive along coast Williamson’s Great surf beach near Wonthaggi – 10 minute drive. There is also a nice walk along the cliff from First surf beach carpark to the Bay beach and then out to Undertow bay. The walk takes about 30 minutes each way.

Wilson’s Promontory is also in the region and takes about 1.5 hours to drive to Tidal River, or less to some of the other beaches and is absolutely spectacular if you have the time.
