These are the most popular places to visit in the downtown of Oaxaca. You can have a very nice walk here and take some great pics.
Walking 15min from our location you'll get to the main square. (Keep walking on Gonzalez Ortega up to Hidalgo street, here you turn left). Once you get to the Zócalo which is the main square of the city, you'll be able to see the cathedral and some museums nearby. Then you can continue your walk on Alcalá street or Andador turístico, here you can appreciate some colorful houses, small businesses, art galleries and coffee shops and you'll get to the Santo Domingo church, a beautiful Dominican church, the inside of this is just awesome, and next to it there's a museum and a botanical garden. At any time of the day i't is just great to walk here, You can find some "calendas".
A 15 min caminando del departamento llegarás al zócalo de la ciudad, en donde empieza el andador turístico, en donde puedes apreciar coloridas casas, museos y artesanías, para al final llegar al Templo de Santo Domingo, un templo único que desees visitar estando en Oaxaca. Ahí mismo encuentras el museo, el jardín etno-botánico y el museo de Artes Gráficas. De día o de noche es un lugar que se debe visitar, ver las calendas de las bodas oaxaqueñas es una gran experiencia para los visitantes.
Santo Domingo Church is by far the most spectacular church in Oaxaca, even more so than the Cathedral and is located in the centre of Oaxaca City. The Santo Domingo church is an important building in Oaxaca because not only is it the biggest church in the City but also it is home to the Santo Domingo Cultural Centre (Centro Cultural Santo Domingo de Guzmán), and Oaxaca’s Ethnobotanical Garden. This stunning church is a must see if you are visiting Oaxaca City

These places are out of downtown, buy definitely you must include them in your visit to Oaxaca.
You can buy a tour or you can go by your own, using public transportation. From our location you walk left to get to Periférico and there you can take the buses or shared taxis.
The Village of Santa María El Tule is undoubtedly best known for the giant cypress tree better known as árbol del Tule. El Tule is a village that is about ten minutes’ drive from Oaxaca City and is also very easy to reach via public transport, either by bus or by colectivo.
The Tule tree is the biggest and oldest Montezuma Cypress in the world with a circumference of around 40 meters, and is an estimated 2000 plus years old.

El TuleThe Village of Santa María El Tule is undoubtedly best known for the giant cypress tree better known as árbol del Tule. El Tule is a village that is about ten minutes’ drive from Oaxaca City and is also very easy to reach via public transport, either by bus or by colectivo.
The Tule tree is the biggest and oldest Montezuma Cypress in the world with a circumference of around 40 meters, and is an estimated 2000 plus years old.
The site consists of two waterfall-like rock formations which have been formed over thousands of years. Both cliffs rise over fifty meters from the valley floor,[8] with one rock formation reaching down twelve metres and the other reaching down thirty metres. The twelve meter one is called "cascada chica" (small waterfall) and "flows" off a base which is about sixty metres wide. The other, "cascada grande" (large waterfall), extends down from a base with which is about ninety metres wide and eighty metres above the valley floor.

Teotitlán del Valle is a Zapotec village and thought to be founded around the second half of the fifteenth century

Aside from the production there isn’t much more to say about the village, there is a nearby hill called ‘Jaguar Mountain’ which is considered sacred and it is home to the MEAPO museum (Museo Estatal de Arte Popular de Oaxaca). San Bartolo is almost solely focused on black pottery production.

The Zaachila ruins are a lovely small set of ruins that are all that remain of the last Zapotec capital before the arrival of the Spanish conquistadores in the 1520’s. Zaachila ruins are still largely unexcavated but there have been two interesting tombs found there thus far.

These entertaining stories quite capture the imagination but it would appear unsurprisingly that these stories are completely Apocryphal.
