These are the most popular places to visit in the downtown of Oaxaca. You can have a very nice walk here and take some great pics. Walking 15min from our location you'll get to the main square. (Keep walking on Gonzalez Ortega up to Hidalgo street, here you turn left). Once you get to the Zócalo which is the main square of the city, you'll be able to see the cathedral and some museums nearby. Then you can continue your walk on Alcalá street or Andador turístico, here you can appreciate some colorful houses, small businesses, art galleries and coffee shops and you'll get to the Santo Domingo church, a beautiful Dominican church, the inside of this is just awesome, and next to it there's a museum and a botanical garden. At any time of the day i't is just great to walk here, You can find some "calendas".

The Ethnobotanical Garden in Oaxaca is fairly unique in its concept and has proved very successful. In 1993 the Military moved out of Santo Domingo church and grounds, and the space was decided, after some petition, to be used for a ethnobotanical garden, a celebration of both ecology and culture.

Oaxaca’s marvellous cathedral is next to the zócalo in the centre of Oaxaca. The initial construction of Oaxaca’s Cathedral began in 1535 and was based on the same designs as those used for the Cathedrals of Mexico City and Puebla. Oaxaca cathedral has undergone many subsequent periods of construction since then (some due to earthquake damage), to arrive at how the Cathedral looks today however.

The site consists of two waterfall-like rock formations which have been formed over thousands of years. Both cliffs rise over fifty meters from the valley floor,[8] with one rock formation reaching down twelve metres and the other reaching down thirty metres. The twelve meter one is called "cascada chica" (small waterfall) and "flows" off a base which is about sixty metres wide. The other, "cascada grande" (large waterfall), extends down from a base with which is about ninety metres wide and eighty metres above the valley floor.

This is on the outskirts of Oaxaca. This village is is famous for the alebrijes that it produces. Alebrijes are curious, fantastic, carved wooden animals that are generally brightly painted. You'll find a lot of alebrijes in different markets downtown, but if you want to visit the people who actually make them, you can visit their workshops here.

The village of San Bartolo is just outside Oaxaca, it’s a small village with a big craft. It is the location where the famous black pottery is produced. Aside from the production there isn’t much more to say about the village, there is a nearby hill called ‘Jaguar Mountain’ which is considered sacred and it is home to the MEAPO museum (Museo Estatal de Arte Popular de Oaxaca). San Bartolo is almost solely focused on black pottery production.

The ex-convent at Cuilapam de Guerrero is an extraordinary building that is unique in Oaxaca. Cuilapam’s ex-convent is famous for having no roof and there are a number of stories circulating to why this is, a favourite is that the devil kept knocking the roof off every time they put it on. These entertaining stories quite capture the imagination but it would appear unsurprisingly that these stories are completely Apocryphal.
