Unde vei fi

Somerset, England, Regatul Unit

The village of Hinton St George has to be considered one of the best examples of a quintessential Somerset village. Set on a secluded hill setting with glowing “Ham Stone” buildings, many of which are thatched and set along the wide High Street, where small worker cottages abut formal priory
buildings and farm houses. The architecture and development of the village was shaped and funded by the Poulett Family, who lived at the extensive Hinton House Estate. At the western end of the village is the Grade I listed St Georges Church, dating back to the 13th Century and is still at the
centre of this strong spirited community.

The aptly named Lord Poulett Arms is just around the corner from Lilac Cottage, where it nestles under a thatched roof in the centre of the village and was Gastro Pub of the Year in 2015 but still maintains the feel of a 'local'. It has a bar and dining room furnished with antiques and real character. Nearby villages also boast good dining such as the Barrington Boar, New Farm Restaurant (over Stratton) and The Dinnington Docks. A walk to the latter is just over a mile and will allow you to take in the scenery from the higher ground. If you are after an adventure a visit to the local Perry’s Cider Farm or the famous Burrow Hill Cider Farm will surely liven up your stay.

The fabulous Hinton St George community village shop offers a good selection of local produce (dairy, meats, veg, wine and bread etc.. ) which is a of superb quality. It is run by friendly and knowledgeable local residents many of whom are volunteers who will be only too happy to help. We
enthusiastically encourage you to shop there to help support the local community. Amazing coffee, tea and muffins, as well as cooked savoury delights can be found at Frogmary Field and Farm Café. The converted train carriage at Pip’s or Café Licious in quaint village of South Petherton are also worth a visit.

Ham Hill Country Park is nearby which offers a spectacular view of Somerset, a nature reserve and is also where the local ham stone is quarried. An ice‐cream van is usually located in the lay‐by at the top and will offer light refreshment after exhausting hilly cycle ride or a walk to the iconic monument on a hot day. You can take in the views over the Somerset Levels and nearby picturesque Ham Stone villages of Norton‐sub‐Hamdon, Montacute and Stoke‐sub‐Hamdon villages. Alternatively, if the
weather is a little inclement, the Princes of Wales perched at the top of the Ham Hill will offer a warm reception, good food and ale.

This part of the region is blessed with many National Trust, Heritage buildings and gardens. The closest being Barrington Court. Other highlights include Montacute House, Muchelney Abbey and Forde Abbey House and Gardens.

The coast is a short drive, about 30 mins where fossil hunting, tours of Lyme Regis, sun bathing, canoeing or rambling along the south west coastal path are all possible.
