Oaxaca de Juárez, Oaxaca, Mexic

48 hours in Oaxaca: what to see, what to do, where to eat.

Weekend in Oaxaca
Imagine that you only have 48 hours to get to know Oaxaca de Juárez. What to do, what to see, where to eat? This guide is designed to explore the city in a single weekend.

Friday, 6 pm. Two hundred years of construction tell thousands of stories. In front of you, the impressive Cathedral of Our Lady of the Assumption - the symbolic heart of Oaxaca de Juárez.

Take the opportunity to enter and admire the sculptural work and the baroque details characteristic of its times.

Friday, 7 pm. As you leave the cathedral, the experience of walking through downtown Oaxaca at night awaits you. To get in touch with the magic of this city: walk through the Plaza de la Constitución and explore the surrounding blocks.

It is worth stopping to admire the jewels that you find on the way.

Friday, 8 pm. You are at a very good time to start a mezcal tour. In an area that spans seven blocks, you will find El Cortijo, Mezcalería In Situ, and La Mezcaloteca - three of the best places to drink mezcal in Oaxaca.

The order in which you visit them is not that important. The important thing is to arrive at each place wanting to experience something new.

Saturday, 10 am. It is a new day in the cradle of Mixtec and Zapotec cultures. What better way to start it than tasting the flavors of the region at the Mercado 20 de Noviembre.

Here the best thing is to try any of the seven Oaxacan moles or some classic colada tamales, but don't limit yourself. Let yourself be seduced by the aromas that cross the market and, if you come across a tlayuda or some stuffed molotes, do not hesitate to accept the challenge of destiny.

Saturday, 11 am. A seven-block walk may be just what you need right now. That is precisely the distance that separates you from the Museum of Contemporary Art of Oaxaca.

This space will give you an introduction to the art scene in Oaxaca, a student and multicultural city. Discover installations, sculptures and other local and foreign artistic manifestations in this temple located on Macedonio Alcalá street.

Saturday, 2 pm. You are only two blocks from the Santo Domingo Temple, so it makes sense to continue your tour in this icon of the city.

This legendary church has survived it all. Throughout its more than 400 years of history, it has been destroyed and rebuilt, desecrated and consecrated. The solid gold altarpieces inside are a real spectacle.

Continue the expedition to the Ethnobotanical Garden, the luxurious “backyard” of Santo Domingo and an architectural jewel in which it is worth getting lost for a while.

Saturday, 4 pm. Another cultural stop? A weekend in Oaxaca is not enough to explore all the corners dedicated to culture that the city has to offer. However, Espacio Zapata is one of those places that you don't want to miss.

In this forum, the street muralists who fill the city with their visions have a space in which to formally display their work. In addition to the murals and other paintings, there are constantly workshops, readings and live music.

Saturday, 6 pm. Those extra hours to get hungry will be worth it when you sit down to eat at one of the best restaurants in Oaxaca. The options we propose are:
1) Pitiona, Author's Cuisine. The menu changes every two months in the restaurant of the young chef José Manuel Baños. This is because the ingredients, almost entirely from Oaxaca, are fresh and seasonal.
Signature cuisine, Oaxaca

2) The Dancers. Converted into a prestigious chain, this place remains faithful to its original concept: incorporating contemporary elements and formats into the traditional cuisine of Oaxaca. The result is a feast of unforgettable flavors.
The Dancers Oaxaca

Saturday, 8 pm. It is time to breathe Oaxaca at night again. Nothing like a walk after dinner to get in tune.

Saturday, 9 pm. To top off the day, take a walk around Café Central, the quintessential party starting point in Oaxaca. Sometimes there is live music, sometimes a DJ, but always a great atmosphere.

Sunday, 10 am. Good Morning! It is the last hours of your weekend in Oaxaca, so make an effort to start early and go out to say hello to this mythical city.

Sunday, 11 am. As a last gastronomic stop, we suggest La Biznaga, on Calle Gral. Manuel García Vigil, one block from Santo Domingo. Under the banner of the Slow Food movement, this place is designed to go early, in relaxation mode, to enjoy snacks prepared at the moment.

Sunday, 1 pm. We propose you one last Oaxacan museum to explore, and it is one that is not very particular that you will not easily see anywhere. We are talking about MUFI, the Museum of Philately of Oaxaca.

It is the only museum in Latin America dedicated exclusively to postal art, in all its forms and manifestations. In addition to the permanent exhibition, the space is magnificent and constantly changes with the work.
Sunday, 4 pm. In these last two hours, the best thing you can do is sit down to digest the trip and enjoy the clean air of Oaxaca once. For this, nothing like an Oaxacan coffee in the Plaza de la Constitución and, hopefully, you will have to see the elderly practicing the danzón with singular joy.

Sunday, 6 pm. Back at the starting point of the trip, the time has come to say goodbye to Oaxaca. If 48 hours in the city is not enough, maybe you are in good time to start planning your next visit to this magical land.
Perhaps, on that next trip, you will have time to explore the fascinating Magical Towns of Oaxaca. Or its mezcal factories. Or its beaches.
