Unde vei fi

Yackandandah, Victoria, Australia

Yackandandah is a small gold rush town situated in the foothills of the Victorian High Country less than 3 hours drive from Melbourne. It is a popular spot for bush walkers and cyclists, with a partially completed rail-trail link between Yack and Beechworth, as well as a host of renowned mountain bike trails within four kms of the B&B. (We offer mountain bike hire for those wanting to explore further afield and free bike storage in our shed for guests who bring their own.)
The village hosts a wide range of stores and services including:
* a large Foodworks grocery store open seven days a week for all your catering needs
* a fresh food/local products market held on the third Sunday of each month
* several eateries including Grace's Place: an authentic Thai restaurant open five nights a week; two local pubs sporting great atmospheres and excellent food choices and sometimes with local entertainment on offer; a courtyard cafe offering coffee, meals and snacks in the Star Hotel; delicious meals at the newly-opened Stockroom and Pantry Cafe serving breakfast, lunch and dinner, along with a great wine selection, five days a week; one of the Beechworth Bakery chain stores; and last but definitely not least the famous Gum Tree Pies and Cafe (every local loves them!!)
* a petrol station and mechanic
* a post office also offering a good selections of books and toys
* a well-stocked Information Centre that sells local produce and maps
* an interesting museum also selling local jams/chutneys etc
* several gift shops offering goods from local crafts folk and those further afield
* an extensive newsagent, with a large gift selection and bookstore
* four quality and unique clothing stores, including a vintage dress shop
* a chemist
* a bike shop offering repairs and servicing
* two art galleries
* an eclectic store selling handmade stringed instruments in all shapes and sizes
* several antique and/or bric-a-brac stores
* three hairdressers
* two banks
* an ATM.
There’s even a large craft hub called ‘Yack Station’ that houses a railway museum and railcar cafe for breakfasts and early lunches, small artist studios and workshop areas, a whiskey and gin distillery and a sourdough bakery located on the hill just behind the petrol station.
At the end of March each year, Yack’s hosts a popular folk festival with street buskers and a variety of musical groups sharing their talent with the world.
There is a beautiful walk at the bottom of our street along the Yackandandah Creek which either takes you into town or along to the gorge which was dug out by gold diggers.
The historical town of Beechworth is only 20 kms away with its fascinating gorge area and a delightful array of specialty shops and cafes to entice visitors - a must-see are the breathtaking Woolshed Falls, just a short detour along the way.
The alpine village of Bright is situated less than an hour’s drive away along a picturesque valley drive passing through the towns of Myrtleford and Porepunkah while travelling beside the Mt Buffalo Range. Bright is renowned for its vast array of delightful stores, specialty cafes, fabulous autumn colours, and the picturesque Ovens River, while the neighbouring village of Wandiligong has a small airfield where keen paragliders can take in the views from above.
Mt Beauty is a delightful little Alpine village located beside Mt Bogong, Victoria’s highest mountain, with several delightful cafes and specialty shops. It’s just on 3/4 of an hour away at the end of the majestic Kiewa Valley, while Falls Creek, the largest ski resort in Victoria, is an easy 1.25 hours drive away...or there’s a winter bus trip from Mt Beauty that takes you up to the ski resort to save the hassle of driving in the snow.
The wine/olive regions of Beechworth, Milawa, Rutherglen and the King Valley are also less than an hour away, so there’s plenty to see and do within a short distance of your comfy home-away-from-home.

My husband, Steve, retired in November 2014 and is enjoying the freedom of not being locked into weekends for our explorations, while I am a former court reporter who now works from home as a published novelist, using my pen name Jennifer Larmar. I usually write contemporary drama - inevitably based around music in some form, whether as the basis for the storyline or as a form of solace - and usually involving an historical or at least factual event with fictional characters. Children's stories with an educational theme is another genre I like to write.
We both enjoy exploring this beautiful planet and often the places we visit end up in the pages of one of my novels.
Five things I can't live without:
1. Our one and only grandson is the joy of my life - as I often say, he's a little pleasure treasure who always makes my heart sing. He lives in Melbourne so we moved from Brisbane to NE Victoria in early 2018 to be that much closer and whatever time I get to spend with him is a wonderful opportunity for making lasting memories. Thank goodness for Sunday night S-k-y-p-e calls - they make the missing that tiny bit easier.
2. Spending time in my study, bringing new characters to life on a computer screen. My catch-cry is, "Writing is like going on holidays everyday - without the expense. I can take my characters anywhere, to do anything, all from the comfort of my desk."
3. My first latte for the day - a good pick-me-up when I'm writing - and my hubby knows exactly how I like it!
4. Relaxing time with my husband. Living in the picturesque foothills of the Victorian High Country offers us a fabulous life walking along the myriad walking paths and back roads, as well as taking the road less travelled and finding out-of-the-way places to eat or be entertained at least once a week.
5. My faith in God - can't imagine living in this world without His guidance and love.
I have too many fabulous travel destinations to list one, but among my all-time favourites, and in no particular order, are:
* Italy, for its history, fascinating people and gorgeous countryside;
* Austria - especially Salzburg - for its pristine beauty and spectacular alps;
* the quaint little towns dotting the country roads of Germany or nestled along the Rhine and Main riverbanks;
* the Cook Islands for incredible snorkeling opportunities in crystal clear waters and delightful people who make you feel very welcome;
* the West Coast of Canada, especially the Rockies and Yukon - stunning wilderness areas with jaw-dropping scenery and wildlife around every corner;
* the Hawaiian Islands - especially Kauai for what has to be the most spectacular coastline in the world when you take a light plane or helicopter ride over the Napali Coast and then soar over the Waimea Canyon, which Mark Twain called "The Grand Canyon of the Pacific" - oh, and snorkeling with turtles is a must-do on any of the four main islands;
* Fanning Island, Kiribati - a miniscule coral atoll, which is 5 metres high at its highest point, only 50 kms around and about 1 km at its widest, located near the Equator in the Pacific Ocean and hundreds of miles from anywhere. We had a fascinating time visiting a group of people who made us believe we had gone back approximately 200 years - something neither of us will ever forget. Sadly, climate change means their beautiful island will probably disappear under the sea in the not too distant future;
* Mauritius for much the same reason as Kauai and the Cook Islands - spectacular volcanic mountain peaks and wonderful snorkeling opportunities;
* New York City, purely for the adrenaline rush of seeing that bustling metropolis and discovering her hidden gems - and lots of cute little squirrels in Central Park;
* the Niagara Falls from the Canadian side, just because their beauty is far more incredible than photos can ever depict;
* and anywhere in Australia, but most especially the fringe areas of the east coast, the south-west corner of Western Australia and riding a horse up in the Snowy Mountains - oh, and a four day drive along the Great Ocean Road is definitely something to put on your bucket list.
We are an easy going couple who enjoy the little things - discovering something new around a corner on one of our drives, a cosy comfortable bed, stumbling upon a quaint café offering tasty uncomplicated food, wildlife of any sort (except for snakes and spiders - oh, and sharks if we're snorkeling!) and just being around people with similar interests to us.
With a love for music and singing, a good musical theatre production is something I enjoy, or just kicking back in a café, listening to an acoustic guitar accompanying a ballad singer is perfect for a lazy afternoon if I can't be part of the action myself.
And if you made it to the bottom of this 'little' background into our lives, we have heaps more stories to tell!
