Northern Dalmatia for gourmets

The Dalmatian cuisine is greatly influenced by the sea. A special characteristic of this cuisine is fish in all its varieties. Fish 'na gradelama' (on the grill) is grilled above wood, fish 'na leso' is braised in water, oil and wine, seasoned with bay leaves, onions, pepper and salt. 'Brodet' is a type of fish soup or a one-pan dish, which tastes especially well when cooked with small fish. Mussels and scampi are typically the favourite 'na buzaru' seafood - prepared with onions, garlic, parsley, pepper and breadcrumbs. Another Dalmatian speciality, aside from fish, is pasticada - beef braised with vegetables. A coveted starter is air-cured ham, prsut, which is usually served with goat's cheese and olives.

Red wine is usually produced from the Plavina and Babic grape sorts. The most famous wine from the surroundings is Babic from Primosten, a fantastic dry wine made from grapes grown in parcelled vineyards – sometimes described as one of the greatest testaments of the human fight against the unruly stone. The most important grape sort of the white wines in the region is Debit, a favourite amongst the wine farmers of the inland. According to tradition, this grape is pressed through an especially strenuous mixture into a very exceptional wine – Zutina.

Discover the regions of Lika and northern Dalmatia! Northern Dalmatia and Lika are mountain regions that offer an unusual variety of natural and cultural-historical monuments. In ancient times, the Greeks and the Romans knew how to appreciate the gifts that the Dalmatians were offering to them. This region has always succeeded, and still does today, in integrating human culture with respect for nature and to hand on this lifestyle to future generations.

Discover with us the city of Zadar and its secrets, guarded behind the centuries-old walls. The former royal cities of Nin and Biograd, together with the romantic city of Sibenik, all on the Croatian coast, can tell us a lot about the long tradition and history of Croatia. The nature Park of Telascica and the national Park Kornati form a unique island universe which will leave a deep impression on everyone interested in visiting them. There is also the nature Park Vrana, full of rare fish and birds of various types. The waterfalls of the Krka River are one of the rare natural phenomenons of this limestone area and still remain intact, ready to astonish you.

You will discover a spectacular river that passes through the middle of the limestone area if you go canoeing or rafting on the Zrmanja River which will introduce you to another world.

The national park of Paklenica, situated in the Velebit Mountain, is something wonderful to see.

The 16 Plitvice lakes found a way by means of nature to transform impressive waterfalls into a fairytale landscape.

Visit with us the "lunar landscape" on the island of Pag and at the same time delight your palate with the typical spicy sheep’s cheese of the region. Smoked Dalmatian ham, sheep’s cheese, excellent wines, “Lika beer” and other specialties will provide a strong incentive to return to visit these idyllic places.

Zadar is the cultural and economic centre of northern Dalmatia. The old town, with ist numerous religious and secular monuments, is located on a peninsula and surrounded by thick walls. The inhabitants of Zadar proudly call their city: “Najlipši grad na svitu!” (“The most beautiful city in the world!”). The former capital of Dalmatia is situated on a peninsula bordered by two “Rivas”: the side facing the mainland is simply called “Riva” – here ferries and passenger ships anchor and fishermen bring their catch ashore every morning. On the other side, facing the island, lays the “New Riva” – the perfect setting to stroll along the waterfront, where lovers meet for their rendezvous; since a few years, it is the only place in the world, where you can listen to the unique melodies of the Sea Organs, whose “melodies” are created only by waves. Embedded between the Rivas, you will discover one of the most beautiful old towns in Dalmatia. The traffic-free main street (called “Kalelarga”), with its boutiques and cafes, is the lifeline of the city. On both sides of the street, you will find picturesque alleys in which the “Klapa” intone their songs of sheer joy. Magnificent historical buildings, such as the circular church of St. Donat, the Cathedral of Sveta Stošija, the Roman Forum and many other fascinating places are waiting to be discovered!
