San Juan, Puerto Rico

Due to the current health protocol, this description with respect to socializing may not be accurate at this time. Entertainment and food venues may not be open or have limited service available.

This is a very quiet neighborhood street with an urban vibe. This house serves as a great springboard to get around the Island. The local scene is happening every night but picks up Wednesday through the weekend. Entertainment is right around the corner and up and down the avenue. For foodies Lote 23 will have you coming back over and over again. Also, consider Calle Loiza, which is hopping. We haven't visited the many bars and restaurants that have sprung up in the area, but only because there’s so much to do we haven't had the time. Come for the food trucks and stay for the drinks and music. Hip and low keyed, this outdoor venue is easy to miss.

Further north is the Food Truck Park. BYOB and bring your own glasses and hang out with locals and tourists and enjoy the local fare or fusion Mediterranean wraps, Peruvian fusion, Chinese street food, and more. Trucks open for lunch and close late on the weekends. StreetParking is limited. Lots of people hang out at these spots.

There is plenty to do at the beach or Malls during the day. Isla Verde and El Escambron provide the closest public beaches close to the metro area. If you have a car try visiting beaches away from the metro area.

Weekends tend to pack the beaches more than weekdays. If looking for quiet beaches, and snorkeling, try Luquillo beach, Vieques Island, or Culebra Island during the week. Luquillo beach has food stands and restaurants that get packed on the weekends with beachgoers and party people.

If going to Vieques or Culebra for some of the finest beaches, check the schedule for ferry availability. (There is a small plane that flys out of the metro area for a modest fee.)
Ferry service is consistent, but there are times when the Ferry is down for repairs. Ferries usually leave Ceiba harbor by 9am but you’ll need to be at the dock by 8am to insure a seat. Best to go during the week to avoid the crowds and insure a ride. From the house we leave at 6:30 am to get through morning traffic on the tollway, and have time to relax. The new ferry station is easy to get to but is secluded on the old Navy base. You’ll go through a Security checkpoint and follow the signs for a mile until you reach the new dock.

Plaza Las Americas and The San Juan Mall are close by. Uber can get you to Plaza Las Americas in 5 minutes. It’s a short walk from the house, but given the heat its better to catch a ride. You can shop until you drop here and then go to the terrace food court and have a quick bite. The food is fast and relatively affordable. The choice is local like El Meson or varied, including Chinese, burgers, chicken and other chain stores. The San Juan Mall is smaller and the shops are more exclusive. Walmart for quick cheap items is nearby too. Get there in 5 minutes. If walking near the Walmart, try the pizza shop across the street. New York Pizza is a great spot. The pizza is as genuine New York pizza as you can find on the Island. Lines are out the door on the weekends.

Old San Juan is still a must see, and must do especially if it’s your first time to the Island. Small shops sell all of those souvenirs, shirts, rings bracelets and bags tourists want to take home, but if you look really carefully you'll find small coffee shops, bars, and restaurants off the beaten path. Get to Calle San Sebastián. It’s worth your while for a cold brew among friends. Ask about La Factoria if you like a variety of craft drinks, and visit Old San Juan at night. Old San Juan like all tourist attractions, tends to be pricey but it can be fun to hang out with the locals in the small plazas after dark. Catch an Uber to Old San Juan and get off at the beginning of the tiny streets.

Uber is an easy way to get around the metro area, but if renting a car is in your budget, you can easily get to any part of the Island from here because all major roadways are literally right around the corner.

At night, catch a show or go dancing in the streets. Plaza del Mercado aka La Placita at Parada 19, just south of El Condado, is wonderful during the day for excellent restaurants open from lunchtime to night time. While you’re there, try the San Juan Smokehouse for USA style barbecue very reasonably priced. The party starts Wednesday nights when the cruise ships arrive, and Thursday, and Friday night there’s music and dancing in the street. Swing to great live salsa music with locals and tourists fresh off the cruise ships. Parking is a low $8 all day.

If you have a car, go out to the Rainforest. It’s 45 minutes from the house. The tollway cuts time and the rate is reasonable. Make sure to activate the tollway responder as part of your car rental.

On the Southwest side, Cabo Rojo and Joyuda are great on the weekend for partying with the locals.

There is no time for relaxing here. You’ll be close to fun 24/7.

Please observe any safety protocols that are meant to keep us safe.
